When one refers to physical development we must always be inclusive of where it all began. GENES. Being apart of the human race one is often judged on the phenotype as well as the genotype.
Introduction: Heredity/Genetics
- the process of passing down genetic material to one's offspring begins with the cell.
-Heredity: passing of genes from one's parent to the offspring - a child receives two sets of chromosomes - a set from the birth mother - a set from the birth father -the chromosomes sets help to determine the genotypes as well as the phenotype of the child - their are many different types of traits one can received whom stand as dominant or recessive traits ( see table 2.1 (Winsor, Murrell, & Magun-Jackson, 2014)) |
Prenatal Development
Germinal Stage
-the period of time from conception - the second week is considered the germinal stage
- the fertilization of two gametes is part of the process of fertilizing eggs
- below is an example of the Trimester Characteristics (Winsor, Murrell, & Magun-Jackson, 2014)

Embryonic Stage
- the period of time from the third week - ninth week
- this is the fastest growth stage during the developmental process
- your baby has over 230 different cell types being created
- when a child experiences a defect it sometimes happens within this stage; it is referred to as a teratorgen

Fetal Stage
- the period of time within the ninth week- until birth
- this is the last and longest stage of pregnancy
- the baby becomes a fetus during this stage
-the baby begins to develop fetters such as fingernails, eyelashes, lips
-this stage allows the baby to properly prepare for life outside the womb

Birth
the process of birth takes place after the prenatal development. After delivery, the child's body is learning to properly adjust to living outside elf the womb. A neonate is another name for the newborn.
Infant Physical Development
there are two different physical patterns of growth that an infant experiences being cephalocaudal( direction of growth) and proximodistal (meaning developing from the center outward)
Physical Senses
-an infant is born with all senses in tact except sight - sensory development and motor development are very important during the infancy of a child - the vestibular system, balance system also places an important role during the development of a child |
Developmental Milestones
- a child has to develop the fine and gross motor skills -fine motor skills involve the muscular system - moving of the lips, ors, arms, torso - these skills are monitored by the doctor/parents for proper development |
Childhood Development
defined by the stature and weight gain in comparison to a baby
Patterns of Growth
-there are three different growth patterns : 1. Neural growth: the brain begins to make connections; interaction with the increment is extremely important during this stage 2. Somatic growth: the growth of the overall body 3. Reproductive growth: the stages of puberty; mostly takes place within the sex organs |
Obesity
- having more body fat then needed - being obese often leads to health problems - it is possible it can lead to social problems at well |
Language
- a child begins learning language as soon as they enter the world - a child's not only learns how to speak; they learn the body language as well - social interaction helps a child to achieve language goals - birth -10 is the time frame where language is developed |
Adolescent Development
Puberty
- the point in which one experiences sexual maturity and goes through a psychological changes as well as maturation - girls typically develop at a quicker rate then boys |
Body Types
- Ectomorph: skinny/ smaller muscles - Mesomorph: typically has a harder body/ muscular - Endomorph: typically has more under muscle/ chubby |
Body Image and Eating Disorders
- body image refers to how people feel they should look - eating disorders often derive from body images examples: many people look at celebrities and feel that just because they look a certain way they too need to achieve the same body as the celebrity |
Sexuality
-curiosity killed the cat when it comes to sexuality PROS: it is possible to explore one's sexuality without getting sucked in to the negative CONS: lead to pregnancy, STD's, or eating disorders - the media heavily induces adolescents and there sexuality |
Physical Aging
the physical aging process has an effect on one's brain functions. As we grow older exercise and being physical becomes more important. Ages also affects our five senses. As one grows into age one begins to experiences loss of sight, hearing, taste and even smell.

How will understanding physical development help me throughout my career?
As a nurse physical development is very important because one of the key components of my job as a nurse is to help people heel. I feel that people are at different stages with in there life physically. As a nurse you have to be willing to accommodate those stages to do your job properly. One of the important things I feel that I can take away from this subject is that everyone is different. We all experience physical development at different rates and being able to recognize the stage in which one is in will help me to prosper within my career.
